Helping you find death records easily
Locating Records of Death
Death records are typically kept in the municipality, or county, where a death has taken place. Sometimes, however, it is not as easy to locate and obtain death records and you would expect.Death records contain more than just information about how someone died. They also contain such useful information as the time and place of death. The mother and father of the deceased should also be listed, if known at the time the death record is filed. In many cases the mother's maiden name is included.
Only local government agencies and states keep death records that are available for issuance to the public.
If you know the location of death, this is the appropriate municipality from which to request death records. In most cases you will be able to apply for this information over the Internet, so you no longer have to travel the issuing office to apply. This has made the whole process a lot simpler than it was a generation ago.
The Vital Records Office
Even if the place of death is local, there is often a long line of people at the vital records office. The time required for record request fulfillment at such offices can vary between fifteen minutes and two months, depending on how that particular vital records office is operated. If you don't want to risk waiting in line or you want a more predictable time frame, you can usually make the request online.
Conduct Research Through the Social Security Death Index
If you have limited information, you may want to take advantage of the Social Security Death Index. This database was started in 1935 and moved to an electronic database recently in order to provide people with location of death information. You will need to have at least some information about the deceased in order to use the search feature. There are tens of millions of entries stored in this database, so the more information you can provide, the better the results will be. Unfortunately, the database only includes those deaths that were reported to the Social Security Administration.
Broad Online Death Record Searches
As they say, you can find just about anything online. The information you need to locate death records is probably available online, but only if you are able to follow enough leads to find this information. The nice thing is that you can do it from your home.
There are some specialized vital records search engines that will help you simplify the process, but they usually charge you for the service. The nice thing about these search engines is that they usually cross state lines, which can't be said of most government death records agency sites. So instead of going through every possible state agency looking for a death record, you can do it all from a single site.
Some of the more reputable death record search sites will be linked to from government websites. Some genealogy websites also provide links to good vital records search sites. If you can't find the death records you're looking for quickly using other methods, these vital records search engines can be very useful.
